What We Learned This Week

Language Arts: We are continuing our work on the book The Hundred Dresses. This is a powerful book about recognizing that our words and actions affect others.  Its message also encourages acceptance and the idea of community. Ask your child about this important book.

Writing: We are finishing up our opinion essays. Next week students will write another opinion essay on a topic of their choice. 

Math: For the remainder of the year, we will work on fun, application activities to reinforce standards from the year. Students continue to practice fact fluency and are working to complete their 30 problem/2 minute test. 

Social Studies: Students are working through chapter 7 to learn about the history of transportation in Michigan and the auto industry. We will finish the chapter next week and there will be a test on Tuesday of the next week.

What We Learned This Week

Language Arts: We have started reading The Hundred Dresses which will help to reinforce our P2 traits that we have discussed all year. It's a great book for the end of 3rd grade! Students will be working independently and in small groups to discuss and respond to their reading. 

Writing: Our final writing unit will focus on writing an opinion essay. This essay will center around Michigan topics. 

Math: We have completed our two-step number stories and all other units for the year. For the remainder of the year, we will work on fun, application activities to reinforce standards from the year. 

Social Studies: Students loved learning about economics through short videos and discussions about scarcity, opportunity cost, consumption, and production. Our final unit will focus on big industry in Michigan. 

Don't forget to read!
 20 - 25 minutes a night minimum will set your student up for an amazing future. Check out this graphic to recognize the importance of reading. A missed day of reading can never be made up.

Week of May 10


Mrs. Covert, Mrs. Knuth, and Miss Yoder would like to send another heartfelt thank you to all of our families for making teacher appreciation week such a wonderful week for all of us. Charlton Park
We may not have been able to attend Charlton Park in person, but our virtual field trip was a success! The park curators did a wonderful job showing and telling about life in the 1800s and 1900s.  Be sure to ask your child about life during that time period.

NWEA & M-Step
Unless your child was absent during the M-Step, all standardized testing for 3rd grade is complete! Way to work hard 3rd-graders!

Charlton Park

Each May, we have the opportunity to take our 3rd graders on a field trip to Charlton Park. Unfortunately, this year we aren't able to attend any field trips...... BUT, the good news is that they will be coming to us virtually! We will have the opportunity to go through each historic building virtually and then connect with one of the guides from the park. Students will be able to ask questions and share thoughts about their learning. In addition, the park sent some hands on materials that we will be able to build and learn about!

NWEA

Our last NWEA test will be math, and we will plan to test Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Thank you for ensuring your child gets a good night's sleep and has a healthy breakfast!

What We Learned This Week

Language Arts: Each day, we are reading a new article and learning about various text structures. We are also answering comprehension questions to go along with the article. We will also begin reading One Hundred Dresses in small groups. 

Writing: Our final writing unit will focus on writing an opinion essay. This essay will center around Michigan topics. 

Math: We continue to work on our operations and algebraic thinking standards. In this unit, we will be solving 2-step number stories, finding factors, and breaking apart larger multiplication problems. It will be important for students to know their multiplication facts for this unit! 

Social Studies: Our next unit will focus on Economics. Students will watch a series of episodes called Econ and Me. We will be discussing scarcity, opportunity cost, consumption, production, and interdependence.
