What We Learned This Week

In Language Arts, we read the book Stellaluna. Students worked with this fictional book to complete their own flipbook of information about it! They established the point of view, they completed a Venn Diagram about bats, etc. Ask them to see their book! This book pairs with the non-fiction we will be reading next week: What If You Had Animal Teeth?

Math was focused on our new unit: time! Students completed work around telling time on analog clocks and determined how much time has elapsed between two points. During Math Workshop, students engaged in various math games to practice skills learned during whole group lessons and participated in additional instruction with teachers.

If you are looking for extra practice opportunities, here are some choices:

Place Value:  3rd Grade, Section B, Activities 1-9 (6 will be a challenge!)

Addition:   3rd Grade, Section C, Activities 1, 2, 6, 9, 12, 15, 16

Subtraction:   3rd Grade, Section D, Activities 1, 2, 6, 7

Rounding:   3rd Grade, Section P, Activities 1, 2, 3, 5, 8

No Social Studies or Science as we have started our Personal Narrative writing unit. Students have brainstormed ideas as well as feelings to write about for their personal narrative. They will complete a graphic organizer, write a rough draft, and publish this writing by the end of the unit!

Word study focused on adding the inflectional ending of "-ed" to the ends of words. Students identified which words needed to be doubled, which needed to drop an "e" and which words did not change at all.

Next week's word study can be found below!

This Week We Learned...

For Language Arts, we are focusing on the book Cats vs. Dogs. This is a nonfiction book that we have paired with the fictional book, Dog vs. Cat, from the previous week. Students had to choose which one would be the winner in their opinion, cats or dogs. They have worked hard on writing this both with a rough draft and final copy! Their hard work is being displayed in the hallway before being sent home.

In Math, students learned how to add using two different ways. Students practiced using partial sums to add as well as traditional addition. We also learned a few different math games to play during our math workshop time!

We learned about trait variation, inheritance, and artificial selection with apples in Science. Students were able to experiment with different types of apples and explore the differences between them.

The focus of Social Studies this week has been learning about our great state of Michigan. Please make sure to practice the map at home as we will be testing next week on Tuesday.

Week of September 28

Education Events in October | Central California SPCA, Fresno, CA

What We Learned This Week

This week, in Math, we finished up learning about rounding and shifted into number grids. We are learning how to find the difference between two numbers using a number grid which really helps with our place value skills.

In Language Arts, we focused on the book Dog vs. Cat, a fictional book, and worked on story maps, character traits, retelling, and more! Next week, we will be focusing on Cats vs. Dogs, a non-fiction book.

Our focus for Social Studies was the state symbols. We discussed if we have seen any of the symbols in our lives as well as created a guide to remember what the symbols were and a fact about them!

For Science, we completed our second mystery: is it a science vegetable or a science fruit? Students got to look at different fruits and vegetables to figure out what category they fit into.

Below you will found the focus of our Word Study for next week.
